Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is a beautiful land-locked country and rich in diversity from low-lying semi-desert to lush highlands enveloped in forests and lakes. Situated on a high plateau in Southern Africa, covering 390 245km, travellers will see a completely different image of the country as known from the media and will realise just how wonderful it truly is, despite the political and economic struggles. Even though the people of Zimbabwe had to sacrifice so much, they haven’t lost their humour and visitors can expect royal treatment! This country, previously known as Rhodesia during its colonial days, has been the focus of many explorers during the last few centuries. It was Rhodes that orchestrated the building of the first railway line through the country which stretches across the entire African continent, and David Livingstone was the explorer to hear the thunderous sound and see the spray of the world’s largest natural waterfall, the Victoria Falls; named after his sovereign Queen Victoria.

For adrenaline-seekers, Zimbabwe is a mecca for outdoor and adventure activities. In the area of the Victoria Falls alone you can go white-water rafting, kayaking, micro lighting, parachuting, horse-riding, cycling and even do the world’s highest bungee jump. The Lake Kariba area offers sailing, house-boating and other water-based activities. Guests being interested in historical sights, can visit the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, that can be found just an hour of the town of Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe is a superb safari-destination boasting the most magnificent array of animals, including the “Big 5” (elephant, leopard, rhino, lion, and buffalo) and it’s a bird lover’s paradise, with more than 600 species recorded throughout the country. You can look forward to experience fascinating wildlife. The Hwange National Park is amongst the country’s most famous attractions as it holds the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa.

Victoria Falls is undoubtedly one of Africa’s most beautiful treasures. They border Zimbabwe and Zambia and are the region’s most visited tourist attraction. Victoria Falls was named after Queen Victoria by the first European explorer who set their sights on them, David Livingstone, however up until then and still today, the falls were known to be The Smoke That Thunders, “Mosi-oa-Tunya”.

The entire volume of water in the Zambezi river travels into Victoria Falls, flowing into its first gorge, creating a spectacle and a true sight to be seen. Aptly getting its name as The Smoke That Thunders, the falls spray water into the air which can be seen for miles, including in the surrounding game reserves and national parks. The area provides both adventure seekers and sightseers with plenty of opportunities to warrant a longer stay. The town Victoria Falls offers some excellent accommodation and restaurant options.

Climate

With mild temperatures, virtually no rain and a low malaria risk, the dry May to October winter season is generally seen as the best time to visit Zimbabwe for game-viewing, although note that September and October are extremely hot and dry months.

The best time to visit the Victoria Falls on the other hand is at the end of the summer rainy season when the falls are in full flood – go between April and May for the most dramatic views. However, it is the August to December low water season that is regarded as the best time to go white-water rafting at Victoria Falls – the volume and speed of the water is reduced and the rapids are more exposed.
